I’m Lawrence Cox. Most of my work starts the same way: I notice something.
A contradiction. A recurring behavior. A system producing something different from what it claims to produce. Or a question whose conventional answer does not quite satisfy me.
I stay with the observation long enough to discover its structure.
I separate what I can observe from what I have assumed. I look for relationships, constrain the idea, test it, and change it when the evidence requires changing it.
Eventually, some observations become useful structures.

Distinguish event, interpretation, symptom, condition, assumption, and evidence.
Look for correspondence, causality, tension, pattern, and relationship.
Give the idea boundaries so it can be meaningfully examined.
Let the idea face evidence and pressure.
Preserve what survives. Change what does not.

Different expressions.
Publishing. Human behavior. Business. Technology. Capital. Products. Organizational systems. Research.
I do not experience these as disconnected interests. They are different fields in which the same underlying practice can be applied: observe a condition, discover its structure, and determine whether that understanding can produce a useful expression.
The expression changes. The underlying practice does not.

MindShapes is the clearest institutional expression of that practice: an observation and publishing company interested in what becomes possible when we improve the quality of seeing before deciding what to do.

I want enough of the work visible that people can examine it, challenge it, use it, and determine whether there is reason to participate.
Hypotheses remain hypotheses. Prototypes are identified as prototypes. Work requiring protection remains protected.
Perhaps there is

The work is active. I’m interested in thoughtful operators, researchers, builders, institutions, investors, and organizations with difficult problems.
